Anesthesiology
The department is a national leader of research into drugs, equipment and techniques to increase the safety of administering anesthesia to children.
Medical staff members serve on national and international committees, and contribute to and edit anesthesiology textbooks.
Our investigators add valuable knowledge and information to the field of anesthesia and pain medicine in children. Research includes finding adequate methods for treating pediatric patients and tailoring procedures to fit the particular needs of children. In addition, the department contributes invaluable knowledge and expertise to research being conducted in other disciplines at Children’s Memorial.
Impact:
Errors reduced in the ICU. A multidisciplinary team from the Division of Pediatric Critical Care and Anesthesiology developed a handover process and protocol for patients transitioning to the cardiac intensive care unit after congenital cardiac surgery. As a result, technical errors and critical verbal handoff information omissions per handover were reduced.
The air-Q intubating laryngeal airway is effective in tracheal intubation. Narasimhan Jagannathan and colleagues found that the ILA was effective in a series of pediatric patients with difficult airways.
